Shipshape and Birmingham fashion! Driver Matthew Graham gets the hose on one of International Forwarding’s new trucks. But cleaner air is the real aim of our £200,000 investment in new equipment as the Birmingham Clean Air Zone launches.
IFL fleet upgrades
We recently invested in two DAF tractor units, trailers and a new Mercedes Sprinter van to reduce our carbon footprint. The vehicles are compliant with the EU’s Euro 6 standard, introduced in 2015 to reduce pollutants from vehicle exhausts.
Reducing air pollution is an ongoing challenge for the UK freight and transport industry. IFL is committed to upgrading its cargo fleet to comply with new emissions standards and to continue to service businesses in Birmingham city’s new Clean Air Zone (CAZ). Our latest investment forms part of an ongoing programme to reduce our environmental impact.

Freight in Birmingham Clean Air Zone
The new Clean Air Zone is an added incentive for freight forwarders to step up fleet greening plans. Birmingham has followed Bath to become the second city (outside of central London) to introduce a Clean Air Zone. The Birmingham CAZ started operation on 1 June 2021. It covers an area of the city centre inside the A4540 Middleway (excluding the Middleway itself).
The initiative aims to improve air quality in the city centre. It is part of a wider UK plan for tackling roadside nitrogen dioxide concentrations by discouraging the most polluting vehicles from entering the zone.
From 14 June 2021 HGVs that do not meet the emission standards for the zone are subject to a £50 daily fee, unless a valid exemption is in place.
As an established Birmingham freight forwarder, IFL has been providing cost-efficient freight and logistics services to the Midlands economy for over 30 years. We are CAZ-compliant and look forward to working with clients within the Birmingham Clean Air Zone.

Pallet network reduces carbon footprint
Addressing pollution issues is not just about greener vehicles but about how we operate.
IFL has been a member of the Palletways network since 1992 and a significant proportion of our UK and European freight is moved through the network. Using a pallet network reduces the empty running of trucks. CO2 emissions are usually much lower per pallet as result since running at capacity maximises efficiency.
With massive growth in the home delivery sector due to Covid-19 and an ongoing driver shortage, it is more important than ever to transport our freight in the most efficient way.
