Euro VI is the European vehicle emission standard (also used in the UK) for regulating harmful pollutants from heavy vehicles, such as trucks, buses and coaches.
HGVs must meet the Euro VI standard to be compliant with UK Clean Air Zones (CAZ) and Londonโs Low Emission Zone (LEZ).
Hereโs why:
1 Emissions reduction
Euro VI sets stringent limits on emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) from vehicles, significantly reducing air pollution. For example, it requires HGVs to emit no more than 0.4 grams per kilowatt hour (g/kWh) of NOx and greatly limits PM emissions.
2 Improved air quality
The implementation of Euro VI helps improve overall air quality, reducing health risks associated with air pollution. This is particularly important in urban areas where vehicular emissions contribute significantly to poor air quality.
3 Compliance for access
Vehicles that donโt meet the Euro VI standard face charges to enter or drive within the LEZ/CAZ. Compliance is essential for operators of commercial vehicles to avoid penalties and ensure that their vehicles can freely access the city.

4 Encouragement of cleaner vehicles
By enforcing the Euro VI standard, London and other cities encourage the adoption of cleaner, more efficient vehicles, promoting investments in low-emission technologies and alternative fuel options.
5 Contributing to climate goals
Meeting Euro VI standards aligns with broader climate policies aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and combatting climate change, supporting the UKโs commitments under international agreements.
Overall, the Euro VI standard is integral to the efforts to create a cleaner, healthier urban environment by minimising vehicle emissions and promoting sustainable transportation solutions. A modern transport fleet can be a real differentiator in this. Not only for compliance reasons but for the benefit of customers โ providing access to city Clean Air Zones and greater reliability โ with fewer disruptions due to breakdowns or repairs.
